Waconia pastor goes viral with inaccurate HIV/AIDS testimony at Legislature [UPDATED]

Mike Frey, the pastor at Northern Lights Baptist Church in Waconia, emerged as the viral celebrity of yesterday’s hearings on the marriage equality bills at the State Legislature thanks to his colorfully inaccurate testimony in the House Civil Law Committee.  Here are some key excerpts, where Frey attempted to argue public health concerns:

When there is ejaculation into a vagina, there is a barrier there, as in your packet it states there, of a cellular tissue that doesn’t allow the sperm — that has an enzyme at the head of it, to penetrate the blood flow. It is designed to go to the egg — that enzyme is designed to burn the outside membrane of the egg cell — go inside the egg, and then deposit the DNA. We call that conception.

When ejaculation occurs inside of a colon it is a highly absorbent material, the cells do not have a barrier for the sperm and those enzymes to enter into the bloodflow. When the enzymes enter into the bloodflow and a continued, prolonged, um, environment to that happens these enzymes into bloodflow it causes what we know as AIDS — acquired immune deficiency syndrome. …

There is an example in Los Angeles County, California, where among the gay community a rash almost like boils, and a very raw skin broke out on the hands, feet, butt, mouth of these gay communities and they couldn’t find a cure for it for a long time.

Frey’s medical information here isn’t exactly correct.  Let’s set the record straight.

First off, the vagina doesn’t have a barrier that prevents HIV/AIDS transmission.  In fact, because there is more surface area in the vagina and the fact that sperm can stay in the vagina for hours or days, women are about twice as likely to be infected from unprotected heterosexual sex than men are.

Frey’s California anecdote appears to be referring to an outbreak of community-acquired MRSA in 2005-2006.  There’s nothing gay-specific about MRSA, as it most typically occurs in hospital settings, while other breakouts have occurred in places where folks live in close quarters (prisons and military barracks), and among folks who frequently get small scrapes and cuts (football players, for instance, are 17 times more likely to get MRSA than a person in the general population).

[UPDATE]:  Sally Jo Sorensen at Bluestem Prairie follows the money behind Frey and Northern Lights Baptist Church.

  1. What an embarrassing and disgusting display. He is ill-informed, illogicial and apparantly lacks judgement skills if he thinks this is appropriate public testimony.

    • What he said is somewhat accurate. The missing component is tearing from the act, especially from the gay sex where the back door wasn’t meant for this activity, which doe allow for straight blood contact. This can happen in vagina sex as well, where micro tears can occur, there by passing the virus to the woman. Kinda of a nasty tesitomny for the subject at hand, though.

Not sure why he went there. I mean if anyone knows anything about marriage, thats the point where the amount of sex falls off, (according to common joke lore), so having infected people getting married would lessen the chance of transmission.

      LOL!

      • So our standard for senate testimony is “somewhat accurate”? Look, this is a non-scientific, non-medical guy stumbling through a bunch of false “medical” information. We can’t tell from this testimony what his REAL objection to same-sex marriage is, but whatever it is he apparantly feels this is his BEST argument. And, what about lesbian sex? Given the graphic spcificity of his argument he must be fine with that.

        • I can’t imagine how lesbian sex would fit with an AIDS discussion, since statistics only show that here in the US, a majority of AIDS transmission is through male to male anal sex. I guess that’s just an inconvenient fact that’s hard to face. I’d ahve just shown the graphic on this from AIDS.gov, and moved on. But if the state had a nickel for every buffoon that went before our legislators and tried to make a point by being extreme, we wouldn’t have a projected deficit at all.

We get “somewhat accurate” testimony on the floor all of the time. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve pure nonsense about climate change in the chamber, and often from the legislators themselves.

  2. It’s easy to bash a Christian Pastor, Mr. Oslsen. Fact remains that male homosexual behavior bears the primary responsibility for the AIDS/HIV epidemic.

    • Then, why are basically half (49.4%, to be exact, as of 2010) of the people in the world with HIV women?

      • If you remove Africa from the equation that percentage changes drastically and is most commonly transferred through male homosexual contact. According to aids.gov, in the US this is by far the biggest reason for the transmission of the disease. For whites this figure is by a factor of 7 over women. Now look at the costs in terms of healthcare to cure. Liberals want to tax the heck out of people who smoke due to the healthcaare costs. But they want to support behavior that leads to more AIDS infection? Seems odd to me.

        • The sort of behavior that leads to more AIDS infection is promiscuous unprotected sex. Want to change this behavior? How about giving homosexuals the same incentives to nurture stable monogamous relationships that heterosexuals have?

          • They ought to be able to do that on their own. We don’t encourage marriage as a society for the purposes of having unprotected sex. We encourage this for procreation and a stable family unit.

    • Neal Krasnoff you do get around

  3. We do not encourage marriage for the purpose of procreation, we encourage it for property reasons. Yes, we do encourage marriage for stable monogamous sex which is usually unprotected unless there is some reason for protection, like avoiding pregnancy, or the existence of disease.

The reality is that we have plenty of sexual practices done outside of marriage.

and how about all the people who have PROTECTED anal sex? Good grief, the far right is hysterical, running around with their hair on fire, because very few people are as – pardon the expression ‘anal retentive’ about human sexuality as they are. People have sex, married people, not-married people. Get over it!

Not permitting gays to marry is not going to reduce, much less prohibit gay sex. That’s just stupid on the face of it, a core flaw, among many flaws, in this guy’s thinking..

No one who is remotely well informed believes that oral and anal sex is unique to homosexuals either; given there are more heterosexuals than homosexuals, and given the frequency that ‘sodomy’ is enjoyed by heterosexuals, there are FAR more heterosexuals engaging in sodomy than homosexuals – and that includes unprotected sodomy.

Orgasm releases oxytocin, which in turn tends to encourage pair bonding, whether homosexual, heterosexual or bi-sexual, and it is present in a variety of species, where it also figures in the maternal and paternal bond with offspring.

I’m more interested in why this guy failed to disclose he was the pastor of a Baptist church, or that his church had the ties it does.

    • AIDS.gov says number 1, by far, transmission of aids is male to male sex. Just the facts. And it’s expensive to society in the form additional healthcare costs. Maybe Dayton wants to tax gay men as much as he does cigarettes. He could have meters installed to record the acts.
